SUMMARY:ICTP: School on Open Spectrum and Applications of White Spaces Tech
 nologies
LOCATION:Trieste\, Italy
URL:http://cdsagenda5.ictp.it/full_display.php?email=0&ida=a13189
DESCRIPTION:The Telecommunications/ICT for \nDevelopment Laboratory (T/ICT4
 D) \nof the\n Abdus Salam\n\n International Centre for Theoretical \nPhysic
 s (ICTP\, Trieste\, Italy)\, in\n collaboration with the\n\n International
 Telecommunication \nUnion - Telecommunication \nDevelopment\n Sector (ITU/B
DT)\,\n\n the Network Startup Resource \nCenter (NSRC) and the National \nI
 nstitute of\n\n Telecommunications (NIT\, Poland)\, \nis organising a Schoo
l on Open\n Spectrum and\n\n Applications of White Spaces \nTechnologies to
be held in Trieste \nfrom 3\n to 14 March\n\n 2014.\n\n\n In the last coup
le of years a new \nopportunity for spectrum use has\n emerged in the form
of\n\n TV White Spaces (TVWS). \nOriginally conceived as a \ntechnology tha
t could\n take advantage of\n\n the guard bands or "white spaces" \nthat we
re left between television\n channels to prevent\n\n interference\, TVWS ha
 s the \npotential to address research \nchallenges of\n remote academic\n\n
institutions\, as well as opening up \nalternatives for building community
\n wireless networks.\n\n Traditional spectrum allocation \nmethods are unl
ikely to be able to \ncope\n with the exponential\n\n growth in demand for
broadband \naccess in emerging markets. There \nis a\n pressing need to\n\n
examine alternative models of \nspectrum allocation. Dynamic \nspectrum\n
sharing based on\n\n software and cognitive radio can \nplay a significant
role in tomorrow's\n telecommunication\n\n systems. With the final goal of
\nconnecting Research and \nEducation\n Centres to the Internet\n\n with lo
w cost means to improve \nInternet access\, the School will \nexamine\n the
state of the art in\n\n Open Spectrum and TVWS \ntechnologies and emerging
\nregulations. The school\n will address the\n\n latest information from T
VWS pilots \naround the world and will include\n hands-on sessions.\n\n\n\n
The following key topics will be \ndiscussed:\n\n • Radio Physics\n\n • So
 ftware Defined Radio\n\n • Cognitive Radio\n\n • Open Spectrum Acess\n\n •
TV White Spaces Technologies\n\n Case studies from TV White \ndeployments w
ill be presented.\n\n\n PARTICIPATION:\n\n\n The School is expected to attr
 act \nyoung scientists\, engineers and\n scholars from countries\n\n which
are members of the United \nNations\, UNESCO or IAEA may \nattend the\n Sch
ool. The\n\n School will be conducted in \nEnglish. Although the main purpo
se \nof the\n Centre is to help\n\n research workers from developing \ncoun
 tries\, through a programme of\n training activities within\n\n a framework
of international \ncooperation\, a limited number of \ngraduate\n students
and post-\n\n doctoral scientists from developed \ncountries are also welc
ome to \nattend.\n\n As a rule\, travel and subsistence \nexpenses of the p
articipants should \nbe\n borne by the home\n\n institution. Every effort s
hould be \nmade by candidates to secure \nsupport\n for their fare (or at\n
 \n least half-fare). However\, limited \nfunds are available for some\n par
 ticipants to be selected\n\n by the Organizers\, who are \nnationals of\, a
 nd working in\, a \ndeveloping\n country\, and who are\n\n not more than 45
years old. Such \nsupport is available only for those \nwho\n attend the e
ntire\n\n activity. There is no registration fee.\n\n\n HOW TO APPLY FOR \n
PARTICIPATION\n\n\n The application form can be \naccessed at the activity
 website\n\n\n http://agenda.ictp.it/smr.php?2573\n\n\n Deadline for reques
 ting \nparticipation: 1st December 2013\n\nMore: https://nsrc.org/calendar/
