Mustafa Toure) Date: Fri, 28 Oct 1994 13:49:25 -0600 (CST) Hi Steve, Well, BELINET is a body set up in Belize to try and establish and promote the use of distance education technologies. The committee isn't doing very much at the moment... but the name has also been applied to the UCB E-mail system, which is probably where you heard it. Our E-mail system is running well, with around 20 uucp sub-nodes. Our server, a 486SX-25/8MB, runs Linux (a freeware version of Unix) and links to UCB's local area network using TCP/IP. We currently have one dial-in phone line, soon to be upgraded to two. Our uucp link is, as you probably know, to the University of Puerto Rico. We are now calling four times per day (twice on Saturdays and Sundays). We are also using some variations on the normal uucp mail protocol - by transferring mail as a single compressed SMTP batch in each direction, rather than separate 'rmail' messages, our link is running much more efficiently. We are still the only E-mail hub in Belize; the other sites are end-users. (The one exception is a BBS system, Belize On-Line, which has its own E-mail customers who dial in there for service). We would love to have a direct IP link, but the costs at the moment are prohibitive. There may be the possibility of sharing someone else's leased line, but the monopoly PTT in Belize has very stringent regulations which prohibit such sharing. However, our LAN is already running TCP/IP protocols (and SPX/IPX at the same time), and we have been allocated a class C network number so we are ready to connect tomorrow if we can get the line! I hope this is of some use. I am attaching a current directory of E-mail sites in Belize for your information. Best wishes, Brian. ---- Brian Candler or University College of Belize PO Box 990 Tel. +501 2 32732 Belize City Fax. +501 2 30255 BELIZE, Central America Directory of E-mail sites in Belize ----------------------------------- as at 28 Oct 1994 Belize AllRadio mike@allradio.com.bz (Mike Gundy) Belize Center for Environmental Studies evan@bces.org.bz (Evan S.
