From: nabil@layla.aub.ac.lb (Nabil Bukhalid) To: sghuter@psg.com Date: Tue, 10 Jan 1995 18:01:47 +0200 (GMT+0200) Hello Steven, Sorry for not answering earlier, as I just received your December 29 mail. The MCI mail account that you have for me is auto-forwarded to a secondary postmaster. Please use nabil@layla.aub.ac.lb The American University of Beirut link to the internet started to be fully operational and stable early March 1994. Our internet link is still running on a 9.6kbps X.25 leased line (TCP/IP over X.25). AUBNET consist of 4 class C networks all located behind a firewall. Users on the AUBNETs are around 200 users at present and we are adding around 20 user per month. AUBNET users can telnet, ftp, send/receive mail, nslookup, ping and finger to the internet. We are blocking the access to the internet news, gopher and mosaic. The restrictions are dictated by the link bandwidth limitations and the prohibitive communication cost. Accessing AUBNET from the internet is also blocked except for a number of privileged hosts.i.e. Our router will permit ip access based on the ip packet source. Ditto cost restriction. Access from AUBnet to the Internet is delegated to 5 AUBnet hosts. Our present plan is to upgrade our link from X.25 9.6kbps to a VSAT 64kbps leased line. We are also working on connecting other Universities and research institutions to the internet. AUB initiated the Lebanese Academic and Research Network (LARN) project but the legal part is still pending. Our present Internet IP volume is around 5 MB per month and we failed to budget for a planned 20MB per month starting January 95. We will be able to permit a maximum of 10MB per month. With the 64kbps link a Name Servers, a mail and a gopher hosts, two hosts, will be accessible from the net. i.e. we reached a basic agreement with the PTT that will permit us to install and operate a 64kbps leased line between AUBnet node and an Internet service provider via a satellite link. We are still negotiating the lost traffic charges, a slow process? The number of hosts on AUBNET is 80 at present, we were expecting to have around 170 new ip hosts in October 1994 i.e. AUB fiber optic backbone was scheduled to reach two major isolated clusters of LANs end of September 1994. Project delayed to March 1995. By July 1995 all of the campus building will be on the net, around 450 hosts. I hope that this is the kind of requested information. Please let me know if you need specific extra details. Best regards and please relay my regards to Randy. Nabil.
