From: To: overseas-list@psg.com, randy@psg.com Date: Sun, 6 Sep 92 15:20:58 EST Dear Randy, Carlos Afonso, from AlterNex, here. Nice to read from you! I guess you know most of what we are developing or already have in operation here. Partly as a result of our upgrade to respond properly to UNCED 92 demands, AlterNex has gone through a major upgrade. We are running a mixed Unix/Novell network of about 45 machines at IBASE (the Rio NGO which operates AlterNex), and the core hardware regarding AlterNex services is now based on five Sun machines (two SPARC II, one IPC, one LPC, one old 4/110). Main machine running APC software is SPARC II with 64 MB of RAM, 2 GB disk and 2.5 GB tape. We have a full-time 64 Kbps link to the Internet via the Rio Net university backbone, using a CISCO IGS router. We also have 3 dial-up lines with Telebit T3000 modems, and 7 lines with 2400 baud MNP5 modems, plus a 16-channel X.25 circuit. Our Internet domain is ibase.br, and ax's full Internet name is ax.ibase.br. We have about 800 users now, and are providing all standard APC e-mail, conferencing, database access and fax/telex gateway services. I will be sending you soon a copy of the final report on the UNCED Information Strategy Project (ISP) in Rio, which we implemented together with APC and the people of the Brazilian Internet during the Eco 92 conference. Regarding the Brazilian Internet (RNP-- National Research Network) I guess you should keep in touch with Tadao Takahashi (tadao@ethos1.ansp.br). Please let me know what are the news on your side. Fraternal regards, Carlos Afonso IBASE / AlterNex cafonso@ax.ibase.br
