Just this past week I was > making some inquiries on just the same thing, and you have answered > my prayer. I have some other fellow Zimbabweans scattered in Canada here > who were very interested in this project. Great! I am very glad to see that there is such interest out there. To give you some background on the whole thing, John Sheppard (from the Computer Centre at U Zim) was down here in Grahamstown in early September for the specific purpose of finding out how to set up an electronic mail link. We decided that the best (?!) bet would be for him to get a small (386 running Xenix) system set up with all the software for email, news etc. When this was installed, our system (quagga) would dial up on at least a daily basis via uucp. The biggest hurdle, apparently, is to get the foreign exchange sorted out to actually purchase the correct software and hardware. Once this is resolved, it will be a matter of getting the mail and news software installed..... > I am currently not in touch with anyone at the University of Zimbabwe > who may be interested in this project but I suppose you would > know something about this. I will include a copy of the uucp map entry for the node that is going to be set up - this contains the telephone numbers etc. Unfortunately, the only person I have had any contact with in regard to this is John Sheppard, but I am sure if you contact him (via normal postal mail, or phone?) he will be very willing to give you more details. I haven't heard from John for more than a month now, and don't know whether this is good or bad news. > I hope to hear from you soon. You may post through the news group > soc.culture.african ( where I saw your post first) or e-mail to me > at chirombo@csd.uwo.ca I hope this is of assistance? If you have any other queries, don't hesitate to contact me. > Thank you. My pleasure. > Canada.
