Systems and Network Security Workshop
This workshop will focus on security from the network perspective (ingress, egress filters, BCP 38, network intrusion detection, network traffic) as well as from the server side (proper admin procedures, firewalls, secure services, etc.). The workshop is aimed at Network and System administrators who are interested in learning best practices for maintaining a secure and stable operating environment. Please review the Agenda to see the topics to be covered. Labs constitute about 60% of the course.
Workshop Goals
- Train network engineering staff from Tanzanian organizations on how to design, build and secure scalable and sustainable networks.
- Learn best practices and methodology for securing networks, including:
- Proper monitoring
- Proper services build-out
- Routing, switching and access control techniques with security in mind
- Strengthen the human network of the Tanzanian technical community in developing national and regional cyberinfrastructure
Requirements
- Some Linux/UNIX experience
- Knowledge of TCP/IP protocols and layer 2 and layer 3 network basics
Recommended Software
SSH
- PuTTY for Windows
- Linux/UNIX and Mac OS already have SSH installed. DO NOT USE PUTTY FOR LINUX OR MAC!
VNC
- TightVNC for windows (32bit)
- TightVNC for windows (64bit)
- Ubuntu users should have vinagre installed by default (or apt-get install vinagre will get it. Alternatively apt-get install xtightvncviewer gets tightvnc for Ubuntu installed)
- OS X has an inbuilt VNC client that you access from the Finder application (command+k) but it doesn't easily allow you to specify port numbers besides the default so try the Chicken VNC client
